Hypotheses of Emotion; The four significant hypotheses of feeling are: The James-Lange hypothesis, the Cannon-Bard hypothesis, the Schacter-Singer hypothesis and the Lazarus hypothesis. The James-Lange hypothesis recommends that an occasion or upgrade causes a physiological excitement with no translation or cognizant idea, and you experience the subsequent feeling simply after you decipher the physical reaction. (Ruud, M.) The Cannon-Bard Theory recommends that the given boost brings out both a physiological and a passionate reaction at the same time, and that neither one of the ones causes the other. (Ruud, M.)The Schacter-Singer hypothesis accepts that an occasion causes physiological excitement, however that you should then recognize a purpose behind the excitement before you name the feeling. (Ruud, M.)The Lazarus theoryâ builds on Schacter-Singer hypothesis. It recommends that when an occasion happens, a psychological evaluation is made, either deliberately or subliminally, and dependent on the consequence of that examination, a feeling and physiological reaction follows. (Ruud, M.) I accept that the most legitimate of the four speculations is Lazarus. I feel that a feeling is based intentionally and subliminally. A genuine model, my granddaughter now and again starts crying, and when inquired as to why, her reaction is â€Å"I don’t know†. I imagine that the least substantial of the four hypotheses is the James-Lange hypothesis. I feel that a person’s feelings need to originate from a cognizant idea and that you don't encounter the feeling â€Å"after the fact†. Thinking, Intelligence, and Creativity; I accept that in depicting thinking, knowledge, and imagination, they all can be related with thinking and levelheadedness. Thinking, knowledge, and imagination, all originate from an intellectual ability that one makes in their psyche. Innovativeness represents one’s reasoning procedure and level of insight. Knowledge is the point at which one can pick up something during a manner of thinking utilizing their creative mind to make new thoughts. Instances of this is, I have an example to make dolls from a telephone directory, while turning every one of the pages mostly down, I started thinking why I was doing this, this was not something that a multi year old would have the option to play with, also I have enough â€Å"junk† up on racks. Three-fourths through the book, I opened it and what ought to have been the base of the dress for the doll, I thought it seems to be like a Christmas tree. In this way, utilizing my manner of thinking and knowledge, I chose to shower paint the completed item green, stick a star on top, and paste little pom-poms around it to making â€Å"decorations† and use it for a focal point on my table during the Christmas occasions.

South Africa †Africa’s biggest and most stable economy (BBC News, 2011) †was welcomed two years back to turn into an individual from BRIC, a monetary association of the world’s quickest developing economies. In April 2011, Jacob Zuma[1] acknowledged the greeting and South Africa authoritatively turned into an individual from BRICS †Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (Hervieu, 2011 ). Other African nations share a similar potential that South Africa has. Teejays offers a help that best serves present day business associations working in urban focuses. The examination underneath depends on the key factors used to partition a mechanical market. Socioeconomics The East African locale, much the same as the neigh boring Middle East and North African (MENA) area has a low yet very quickly developing populace. The majority of the region’s populace is included youngsters. Kenya has the most elevated populace in the district and gives a fair portrayal of the region’s general demographical information. Over 97% Kenya’s populace is younger than 65, with the country’s middle age approximated at 18.9 years (Index Mundi, 2011). In spite of the fact that the locale has a generally high populace development rate, a huge level of the populace despite everything lives in rustic territories. Kenya, which is the biggest economy in the district, has just 22% of its populace living in urban focuses (Index Mundi, 2011). Teejays must guarantee that the preparation bundles it creates will target organizations looking to take advantage of this youthful market. Neighborhood organizations in the area have forcefully attempted to enter the region’s youthful market. For instance, c ell phone organizations in the district regularly discharge versatile taxes that are appealing and moderate to youngsters. The area has seven significant urban areas †Bujumbura (Burundi), Kigali (Rwanda), Kampala (Uganda), Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania), Kisumu, Mombasa and Nairobi (Kenya). Other significant exchange pla ces are Dodoma (Tanzania), Masaka and Jinja (Uganda) and Nyeri, Eldoret, Nakuru, Kericho, Thika and Garissa (Kenya) (Kimani, 2009). While the significant urban communities in the district are home to organizations that offer types of assistance, the towns are centered around creating merchandise and farming produce (Kipkorir, 2010).Advertising We will compose a custom report test on The East African Market: Population Demographics and Economic Segments explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More Teejays should along these lines comprehend that the best market for its administrations will come at first from the region’s significant urban areas. As the district develops, other enormous towns will have grown more organizations that require Teejay’s client care preparing and consultancy administrations. At the point when the opportunity arrives, Teejays will have built up an affinity in the district and will thusly move into the new market effortlessly. End The East African market isn't one that requires a lot of division like different markets. In the UK, for instance, the market must be isolated along social, financial, segment and political lines, making the procedure of market division incredibly intricate. This isn't the situation in East Africa, where just two primary parameters truly impact the division procedure: socioeconomics and monetary portions. So as to best take advantage of the region’s advertise, the best path for Teejays will be to target organizations that work in the administration business. Organizations that give products however are increasingly disposed to give top notch client care so as to engage their objective markets exist however. The East African Breweries Limited, the region’s biggest maker of mixed refreshments, faces expanding rivalry either from littler organizations like Nile Breweries and Keroche Breweries, or from bigger organizations like Heineken and Guinness (Frontier Markets, 2011). O rganizations like these require legitimate client care preparing so as to stay serious in such a developing business sector, and Teejays can likewise concentrate on such organizations significantly more. At long last, when the organization has set up a solid piece of the overall industry in huge urban areas, it needs to move into littler markets before different contenders do as such. Mombasa, Kenya, is the biggest port city and one of the biggest traveler goals in the locale (Bowden, 2007). Entering such markets will require Teejays to utilize the compatibility it will have created in significant urban communities to spread their administrations. Teejays should likewise build up a decent comprehension of the region’s neighborhood business culture. Neighborhood organizations in the locale don't confide in worldwide organizations, especially with these countries picking up autonomy from European countries under 50 years prior. Once Teejays sets up trust in the district, at tha t point this market can without much of a stretch lead to exponential development of the organization. References Altman, A. Stephey, M., 2009. Management of Outbreaks (Case Study Sample) Content: Management of Outbreaks Name: Institution: Review of Answers Jane Stafford has noted that measles is an actual threat in Australia. Although it is managed and controlled by an infanthood vaccine, it still finds a way of creeping back to the people. Therefore, it is agreeable that the government should be in continuous alert and surveillance in order to detect and treat new cases. As a viral disease, measles outbreaks can be hard to control especially in cases where the outbreak has spread a lot. The policy to have a second immunization against measles at childhood should be encouraged. This is because research shows that many Australians are not adequately protected from the disease. Low adequate results from low herd immunity that has been experienced in the country. Malshadi has made an interesting report on Pertussis. One of the things that he notes correctly is the elusive nature of the whooping cough virus. Australia has not been able to control the disease efficiently through vaccination. Phonological Segments Units of Sound

In speech, a segment is any one of the discrete units that occur in a sequence of sounds, which can be broken down into phonemes, syllables or words in spoken language through a process called speech segmentation. Psychologically, humans hear speech but interpret the segments of sound to formulate meaning from language. Linguist John Goldsmith has described these segments as vertical slices of the speech stream, forming a method in which the mind is able to interpret each uniquely as they relate to one another. The distinction between hearing and perceiving is fundamental to understanding phonology. Though the concept may be hard to grasp, it essentially boils down to understanding that in speech segmentation, we break down the individual phonetic sounds that we hear into discrete segments. Take for instance the word pen — while we hear the collection of sounds that make up the word, we understand and interpret the three letters as unique segments p-e-n. Phonetic Segmentation Another key difference between speech and phonetic segmentation, or phonology, is that speech refers to the full act of speaking and understanding the oral use of language while phonology refers to the rules that govern how we are able to interpret these utterances based on their segments. Frank Parker and Kathryn Riley put it another way in Linguistics for Non-Linguists by saying that speech refers to the physical or physiological phenomena, and phonology refers to mental or psychological phenomena. Basically, phonology works in the mechanics of how humans interpret language when spoken. Andrew L. Sihler used eight English words to illustrate the idea that the articulatory figures of segments are easily demonstrable given well-chosen examples in his book Language History: An Introduction. The words cats, tacks, stack, cast, task, asked, sacked, and scat, he states, each contain the same four, evidently discrete, components — in very crude phonetics, [s], [k], [t], and [à ¦]. In each of these words, the four separate components form what Sihler calls complex articulations like [stà ¦k], which we are able to interpret as uniquely separated in terms of sound. The Importance of Segmentation in Language Acquisition Because the human brain develops an understanding of language early on in development, understanding the importance of segmental phonology in  language acquisition  that occurs in infancy. However, segmentation isnt the only thing that helps infants learn their first language, rhythm also plays a key role in understanding and acquiring a complex vocabulary. In Language Development From Speech Perception to First Words, George Hollich and Derek Houston describes infant-directed speech as continuous with no clearly marked word boundaries, as is speech directed at adults. However, infants must still find meaning to new words, the infant must find (or segment) them in fluent speech. Interestingly, Hollich and Houston continue that studies show that infants under a year old are not fully able to segment all words from fluent speech, instead relying on predominant stress patterns and a sensitivity to the rhythm of their language to draw meaning fro fluent speech. This means that infants are much more adept at understanding words with clear stress patterns like doctor and candle or parsing out meaning from language with a cadence than understanding less common stress patterns like guitar and surprise or interpreting a monotone speech.

Population, Industry, and Generals †How the Confederacy...

The Civil War was an unusual war- and the odds were very bleak for the Confederacy at the start, yet they won most of the conflicts early on. The reason the confederates were not immediately beaten is largely due to the impressive tactical genius that they brought to the battlefield which allowed them to outmaneuver and slow Union forces until they finally ran out of money, soldiers, and supplies. The Civil War had almost the same number of casualties as all other wars in US history combined (McPherson and Bruce vi-vii). The Confederacy faced impossible odds, with almost all of the Union’s industry having been in the North even prior to the secession. The Confederate forces were about equal in size to those of the Union at the start,†¦show more content†¦The Confederacy had hardly any naval strength, which was critical. If the Confederates had had a large navy, they might have been able to break the Union blockade. Their clients for cotton did not come to their aid either; despite some talk of intervention in the war, no action was taken by Britain or France (McPherson 384). The â€Å"allies† of the Confederacy simply did not want the trials, costs, and casualties of a war on their hands because of another country’s civil war. Such an action could potentially spark another war, something that Britain and France simply figured that the Confederacy was not worth. At the time, medicine in both countries (truthfully worldwide) was still very primitive. There were surgeons who were part of the military, and medics were very sought after. There was little they could do to help, however. According to the Memoirs of General William T. Sherman, â€Å"the great majority of wounds and of sickness should be treated by the regimental surgeon,† (Sherman 393). The treatment given back then to a wound from a gunshot wound was amputation without anesthesia- as it would not be invented yet for about a century- and after surgery, doctors did not wash their hands or instruments, exponentially increasing the likelihood of infection of a wound and lowering the likelihood of survival. The Union had an advantage in this, though not due to superior doctors or medicine. The Union had roughly four and a half times as many citizens as theShow MoreRelatedImpact of Science on Society38421 Words   |  154 Pagesour housing, clothes, and food, our methods o f transportation, and, indeed, even the length and quality of life itself, science has generated changes in the moral values and basic philosophies of mankind. Will Intuits proposed solution work? What are the key uncertainties?3. What should the team do next? Please be specific. Answer: Case1 1. EBO management system evolve over time The EBO management system evolved as the worlds dominant computer company. The management analyzed the business opportunities that were not merely confined to the product upgrades. The new technology was implemented for analyzing the possibilities for commercialization of the business. It is because the need of customers has to be analyzed. Founded in the year 1911, IBM continued for many years and was known for mainframe. The company was led with the innovations and systems/360 family of products with the floppy disk and early versions. In the early 1990s, the EBO management system, upstaged the IBM by the mire nimble competitors and in the year 1991 it was the first time in 45 years that, company stopped the growing one despite a dynamic industry that was expanding. In this way, the EBP SYSTEM evolves over the time. It also has a kind of the management system, that was designed for the large and the established business with the new businesses as well (cs, Audretsch, Strom, 2009). a. During the Thompson era, it was accomplished that with the limited kind of the staff, the team made the focus on the early efforts on the development of the seven corporate EBOs, rather than making the work on the groups to evolve the own EBOs management systems. The goal that was set out was related to the fact that with each corporate EBO, there was to create the sound footing where in this process was involved that of the leadership at the corporate level strategy.b. The corporate strategy aimed at the critical changes before the Thompson era because there was to add the expertise in the project management with the help of the marketing and strategy. In the year, 2001, there was made the IBM veteran of 23 years and the member was of 300 in number. Staffing was done in the manner as to look over the meetings of the management systems. The process and the systems involves that in the year 2002, there was redefined the monthly and the quarterly reports that was provided to the sen ior management (cs, Armington, 2006). 2. Elements of the current EBO management system The key elements of the current EBO system are as follows: Leadership: as stated above, the IBM had like most of the companies traditionally assigned younger and it has less experienced employees. Therefore, it decided to make the experienced leaders with the numbers form and to the emerging business it was all useful. Competencies: many of the EBOs fall into the white spaces that exists between the established businesses ad he success that is hinged on the leaders ability to make the navigation process with ease. The best EBO leaders are skilled at working within the system and the knowledge and about come the organizational level. Recruitment and selection initially, there are many managers who doubt to become the EBOA leaders and the risks factors that were involved is that of the fact that resources are few in number. When one is working many people then one could form the opinion what they have an opinion for managers coming from different paths (Alex, McCalla and Nash, 2006). Career path: although all of the EBOs were only sometimes old, there were some questions related to the duration of the assignment with which the job was the part of the normal rotation or not was considered. Some, such as, Thompson and riley like also saw the assignment and were of the view that all the leaders need to have included in the developmental plans. In this case, there were not all the EBO s agreed. Many of them had made the attachment to the job with the fixed way and thus was given the forward look to the rotating the EBO leadership positions. The job could be said that it has the breadth and the excitement that was all difficult in other positions. Summary Once selected, the EBO leaders were evaluated using the same performance review system that was made applicable to the IBM managers and the difference as that of the reviews where these reviews were based on the financial metrics. To task force member explained the reason as of separate compensation system to make the evaluation with the strategy development like that of the engaging the market place etc (Anderson, 2002). 3. What should Harreld do? There is required to have some sort of the strategy development that is one of the primary responsibilities of the EBO leader that was reaching to the kind of the strategic clarity and the term that was used by the IBM describes the deep understanding of the marketplace and the set of the customers that was to be perused. Engaging the market place: the first thong that the herald should have to do is that to resolve the basic questions like that of the customers and the needs of their own, the EBO team has to manage and engage the direct with the market place where the part of the challenge for the EBOs was shaped to designed the evolution of the markets. In the many of the cases, they would not have been the clear directions and by crafting the simple process and the built commitments there would be established the success all the way (Audretsch, 2007). Review of the meetings: there is also need to review the meetings with the experiments that come upon and there is to revise the strategies and the designs and much of the work is to be derived from the monthly meetings and it exist between the EBO leaders and Thompson with the appropriate individuals. Summary The EBO management system looks to the marketing systems and the thus with the great pace in the market, it has made some the growth strategy and made some of the recommendations at the corporate level, and group level. At corporate level, EBO suggest to adopt the three horizons as an overall IBM business process that will devote the senior executive time to see the H2 and H3 businesses. This will improve the group level and encourage deciding the appropriate investment balance by the corporate EBOs and also defining the groups that is within the specified management systems of EBOs? Case2 1. Evaluation of Ian Telford, the entrepreneur The evaluation of the Telford lies in the fact of the well-articulated position where the complementary channel as he would have thought has clearly the defined business rules. The Telford is based on the model customer and the story that was shared by it was all convincing for the e-epoxy.com venture as regarded here in this case study. When it comes of the initial specifications then the while preparing the same specifications, was observed on the grounds that there is made no kind of the major revisions on it and the project also got the progressive nature. He met all kind of the IS Demands on the time. It means that with the process that was followed here according to this principle clearly says that with this the principles it was made the specification with the help of the certain guidelines that will make the evaluation of the company at the very ease way. At every time and on every time, there was provided the initial specifications. There were kind of some of the best IS arc hitects that were all volunteered for the project and the Belford also has recognized the work of them and had made the appreciation of the work that was done by them. When the first order was received then the question that was put was whether it will be suitable for the process to run or not. But he took the trouble and called the IS system. In fact, the instant ownership was also given of the project. The system developed was not at all saleable and it needed to one robust back up with the planning process in the line system (Carsrud, Brannback, 2007). 2. learn from Ian Telford One thing that could be learning from the Telford is the strategy and the building of the right team. The Telfords team includes that of the John Everett, Olivares and Lomba. All these three look for the change in the assignment. Telford, while sharing his experience on how he acquired the Olivares said that when he was in Cuba, he told that this is the marketing job available for you and there is no kind of the description, level or the title. It is somehow risky. He also explained that there was the chaos whether the present venture will survive or not or even he said that he would be surviving like his boss is not known to him. When the Telford was asked that what would happen when the venture got failed. Then he replied that it would be like a hit to his career. But simultaneously he was not worried for it. He was more concerned with the experience and the future of the team members. Even they all were ready to take the decisions on the risky assignment. It was this way that made them decided what was really occurring in this stage and with these there comes the way that he tried to develop the escape routes to all. The team was this bonded easily and they enthusiastically pursued the task of launching the business and it was January 2001, where the launch covered the US and Europe. Telford also sent the e-mail. Ian was having a rich experience in the industry and with it has come the deep marketing insights and also had worked with the deep marketing insights. There is always the grown chance to measure the time of it. He also possesses the exceptional ability to understand the stake holders and dance around the vested interests. He could be said to be the all-rounder in this field. So, his team building up and the way he got experience teach and make us learn more about it. 3. How superiors support Ian Telford It is always the senior executive that had made a kind of the support to the Telford and his company where there was made the connection between the venture proposal to the big strategic opportunity that was made for the company to survive and for the growth of it. When there is made the lot of time is to be made spend in from of the venture, then the lots about the discussing about the data and the idea, suggesting the lot about the time for the investment process and etc, are to be made,. Even what group of the people should be involved is the question and there must be ensure that they are agile. We have to learn to make the decisions on this respect. Some of the entrepreneurs will make a rush from A to B, knocking the down barriers while there may become the obstacles and they will make a run on it. It may be more kind of the smarter to go with the effective way. The superiors have played a greater role, as they have always made the right approach and the direction in the manner that has made the profit-loss share of the company to be run in the proper manner. The rounding process of the entrepreneur is to be solved ad this is the only way that the superiors have made the solution of the problem in this respect with which they have carried upon on the same task. The superiors have always made the fair kind of the assistance in this respect where the entrepreneurship has been carried with the good way and thus maintained the profits of the company in this regard (Carsrud, A. L., Brannback, 2007). Summary Telford has been experienced a lot from the business and the industries and with it Belford, proposed the pricing strategy on the web that was higher than the net price after there was made the volume discounts. Belford has tested the prototype of the site and that has put the good business plan. The rumor that was started was that with the leading chemical distributor there were two major chemicals company and the internet company coming together. This was the reason he got the top management commitment. Case 3 1. Problem Intuit is addressing Here following are the problems that intuit are addressing to: Lack of transparency: there is the lack of transparency and with these there will be no kind of transparency and the company will not be able to provide on the mere grounds that will make the good to the farmers as Mahatma Gandhi refereed, farmers as the backbone of the country. Would farmers be able to estimate their gains: another question that has been raised is that whether they will be able to estimate the gains? When the crop seasons come and the farmers put a lot of the seeds and they would definitely expect the return on it with the good income, then they would experience the gain or not. Farmers sold about 65% of the produce with which the wholesale markets that are known as the mandis the is within the 40 miles of where they lived produced this much of produce. Would farmers be getting the tangible financial value form the services?: the auction sale is one of the process of the transaction in the mandis and with it comes the farmers auctioning their produce by placing it on the outside of the agents store and within the time, one by one with it, each of the farmers name would come to the ascending prices. More of the auctions will make the financial conditions good and stable. Would intuit be able to handle the operational challenge of collecting reliable: agriculture represented the 25% of the Indias GDP and has also been accounted for the 60% to 70% and there could be said they it will be able or not the handle depends on the data and facts as has been presented in this case study (Audretsch,, 2007). Root causes: The root causes are that the farmers could not make the effort of the high yield seeds, fertilizers and the pesticides. With this, they also have the lack of the knowledge of the volatile harvests and farmers were often impoverished. Intuits proposed solution work Intuits proposed solution work in regard to this will work as the method of the follow me home was carefully observed how the customers used the products in the real world and also the agrinova team went into the nearby rural areas with the state of the Karnataka and they found that they were happy that someone is solving their problem and helping them. Farmers are community oriented. With it, there was also seen the fact that they have the better understanding of the crops and it is to some extent. With the help of the mobile technology like that of the mobiles that could be reached there the problem of the farmers will be sort out. The group also emphasized to use the information technology and the mobile phones to increase the size of the farmers where there could be made the networks. This way the great kind of the help will be provided in order to give the placement to the farmers and the methods and the programs they have been followed at the greater extent will help the one to gain momentum in this the very was. The business opportunities will gain. The uncertainties are that the farmers do not know what to grow. They had no kind of information regarding the plant of the gibe crop. Therefore, they lack the knowledge, that what are the crops that could be sown for the export purposes. What should the team do next Because of the reasons that the mandis do lack the transparency therefore to have the two potential services will help the farmers and that is crop exchange and the price discovery service. There will be given the several free and the subscription based internet, voice based agricultural information and the SMS that will provide the mandi crop prices. Secondly, the tangible financial benefit is realized or not by the farmer was put into the question(Alex, McCalla and Nash, 2006) Summary This focuses on the searching of the new business opportunities where the agriculture represented the 25% of Indias GDP and it is well known from the fact that the account is of the 60% employment. There were approximately sad to be the 150 million farmers and with it has come the crops sale rather than personal consumptions. The early ideas were explained by the experts in order to understand the problems. So, they suggested the kind of the divisions of the groups to assist them. References: cs, z. J., Audretsch, D. The first way identity thieves are stealing others identities through social media, is simply by looking at a person s general information . General information on social media sites are things such as a person s name, phone number, any schools that they have attended and email addresses . Due to low privacy settings just about anyone can access this information and use it to their advantage. Within each social media site there is a search bar ,search bars allow for people to look up a name of any person who owns a social media account .Thieves can use the search bar to look up any random name such as Jane Doe . By searching this name hundreds of profiles can pop up with pictures allowing for anyone to click on .Once clicked on thieves can view jane does profile (depending on the high or low privacy setting) ,thieves can now view general information take note and go on with what knowledge they have just obtained to stealing a person s identity .According to the Better Business bureau about 30% of Facebook users did not have their profiles set to private ,compared to the 14% of people who did not know their Facebook privacy settings at all. This page will ask you to re-enter your password. These criminals will get you to this page from a link in an email or private message or public post with a link to a fraudulent site. If you are already logged into a networking site and then asked to log in again, be aware that it is a red flag and it is probably a scam designed to make you divulge a lot of personal information to someone with bad intentions. This is perfect example of someone with bad intentions ( identity thieves) inviting you to a page through internet invites, attempting to have people generate information . Thomas Alva Edison Is Considered One Of The Greatest Inventors In Hist

Thomas Alva Edison is considered one of the greatest inventors in history. He was born in Milan, Ohio on February 11, 1847 and died in 1931. During his life he patented 1,093 inventions. Many of these inventions are in use today and changed the world forever. Some of his inventions include telegraphy, phonography, electric lighting and photography. His most famous inventions were the phonograph and the incandescent light bulb. Edison did some of his greatest work at Menlo Park. While experimenting on an underwater cable for the automatic telegraph, he found that the electrical resistance and conductivity of carbon varied accordingly to the pressure it was under. This was a major theoretical discovery, which enabled Edison to invent a pressure relay using carbon rather than magnets, which was the usual way to vary and balance electrical currents. In February of 1877 Edison began experiments designed to produce a pressure relay that would amplify and improve the audibility of the telephone, a device that Edison and others had studied but which Alexander Graham Bell was the first to patent, in 1876. By the end of 1877 Edison had developed the carbon-button transmitter that is still used today in telephone speakers and microphones. Many of Thomas Edisons inventions including the carbon transmitter were in response to demands for new products and improvements. In 1877, he achieved his most unique discovery, the phonograph. During the summer of 1877 Edison was attempting to devise for the automatic telegraph a machine that would transcribe a signals as they were received into a form of the human voice so that they could then be delivered as telegraph messages. Some researchers had theorized that each sound, if it could be graphically recorded, would produce a distinct shape resembling short hand, or phonography, as it was known then. Edison hoped to make this concept real by employing a stylus-tipped carbon transmitter to make impressions on a strip of paraffined paper. To his amazement, the barley visible indentations generated a vague sound when the paper was pulled back beneath the stylus. In December 1877 Edison unveiled the tinfoil phonograph, which replaced the strip of paper wrapped in tinfoil. Many people would not believe what they were hearing including a leading French scientist who declared it to be a trick device of a ventriloquist. The publics amazement was quickly followed by universal approval. Edison became famous all around the world and was dubbed the Wizard of Menlo Park, although ten years passed before the phonograph was transformed form a laboratory curiosity into a commercial product. His most famous and most commonly used invention is the incandescent light bulb. American scientists including Samuel Langley needed a highly sensitive instrument that could be used to measure minute temperature changes in heat emitted from the Suns corona during a solar eclipse along the rocky mountains on July 29,1878. To please those needs Edison invented a microtasimeter employing a carbon button. This was a time when great advances were being made in arc lights so that electricity could be used for lighting in the same fashion as with small, individual gas burners. The basic problem seemed to be to keep the burner, or the bulb, from being consumed by preventing it from overheating. Edison thought he would be able to solve this by coming up with a microtasimeter-like device to control the current. He proclaimed that he would invent a safe, mild, and inexpensive electric light that would replace the gaslight. Inventors had been attempting to devise the incandescent light bulb for fifty years, but Edisons reputation and past achievements commanded respect for his bold prediction. As a result, a group of leading financiers, including J.P. Morgan and the Vanderbilts, established the Edison Electric Light Company, and advanced him $30,000 for his research and development. Edisons idea was to connect his lights in a parallel circuit by subdividing the current so that the failure of one light bulb would not cause the whole circuit to fail. Some well-known scientists predicted that such a circuit could never be possible, but their findings were based on systems of lamps with low resistance (the only successful type of electrical light at the time). Edison, however, determined that a bulb with high resistance would

This Space Intentionally Left Blank

This Space Intentionally Left Blank This past Thursday, a woman near and dear to my heart, my Aunt Mickey, left this world unexpectedly. As her son, my cousin Michael, wrote the night she died, â€Å"There is a massive hole in the universe tonight – and its name is Maxine Lois Simon Unger.† In thinking how to honor the memory of a woman who, despite how much she loved me, refused to subscribe to my blog, I thought what could be more befitting than a [mostly] blank entry. Aunt Mickey, I won’t be forwarding my blog to you this week. But perhaps, from wherever you are, you’ll know this one is for you.
